Day trips to nearby locations allow for good savings in accommodation costs. The city offers many attractions for seasoned travellers, including excellent dining at many fine restaurants. Visit the Bastion, a fortified tower that once protected the harbour from marauding Indians, and the Nanaimo District Museum, which has displays showing Nanaimo as the coal mining centre it began as a hundred years ago. Experience the old world ambience of the city centre, and spend a day exploring the Nanaimo Harbour.
